Hungarian Cup: Advantage Vidi, Debrecen and Honvéd
Vidi seized a slender advantage after a game of three headers in their Hungarian Cup quarter-final first leg against Ferencváros at the Groupama Aréna, while Debrecen beat Mezőkövesd 1-0, Honvéd come from behind to beat Budaörs, and Soroksár held Puskás Akadémia to a draw.
The tie of the quarter-finals saw Ferencváros host Vidi, and the clash between league-leaders and the reigning champions was a suitably feisty affair. Vidi took an early lead, Roland Juhász heading Szabolcs Huszti’s free-kick past Dénes Dibusz in the 6th minute.
Ferencváros levelled on the 27th, Leandro crossing the ball into the box and Fernando Gorriarán getting the feintest of touches to back-head the ball into the corner of the net. With chances at a premium, Vidi scored what could prove to be a vital winner in the 58th minute, Vinícius heading home a Huszti corner from the left to give them a 2-1 lead to take into the second-leg at the MOL Aréna Sóstó.
Debrecen, celebrating the club’s 117th Birthday on Tuesday, took the initiative early on against fellow first-division side Mezőkövesd at the Nagyerdei Stadion. Ádám Bódi and Erik Kusnyír both tested Dávid Dombó in the visitors’ goal in a goalless first half, the only goal of the match coming in the 58th minute when substitute Dániel Zsóri converted Szabolcs Barna’s cross from the left.
Second-division Budaörs proved a hard nut to crack for Honvéd in their quarter-final first-leg at the Grosics Gyula Stadion in Tatabánya, taking a 22nd-minute lead courtesy of a deflected Miklós Sajbán.
They held the lead until the 63rd minute, going down to ten-men when Alexander Kékesi was sent-off for upending Danilo with the Brazilian clean-in on goal. Former Honvéd goalkeeper Szabolcs Kemenes saved Filip Holender’s initial free-kick, but substitute David N-Gog was on-hand to bundle the rebound home from close-range.
Budaörs squandered a chance to regain the lead not long after, András Horváth saving an András Stieber penalty, and former Liverpool striker N’Gog proved the match-winner with 13 minutes left to play, converting a Danilo cross from the right to give Attila Supka’s team a 2-1 lead to take into the second-leg in three weeks’ time.
Puskás Akadémia twice came close to scoring in the first few minutes against Soroksár, but it took them until first-half injury-time to take the lead, Vega playing a one-two on the edge of the box with Nándor Tamás before scoring with a deflected effort. Soroksár equalised with fifteen minutes left to play, Márk Orosz capitalising on some slack home defending as his deflected shot from outside the box wrongfooted Branislav Danilović in the Puskás goal.
