Hungarian football mourns József Tóth

The Hungarian football world is mourning former 56-time Hungarian international footballer József Tóth who passed away on Thursday 11th August, aged 71.

The defender known to many only by the nickname 'Jokka' was born in Mosonmagyaróvár on 2nd December 1951. Tóth started playing football there, then moved to Pécs in 1969, where he played in a total of 132 matches, scoring three goals.

Six years later, he moved to Újpest, wearing the purple and white shirt 263 times during his nine years here. He spent his best years in Újpest, becoming Hungarian champion twice and a Hungarian Cup winner twice, all the time as a real crowd favourite. In 1984, he signed a contract with MTK-VM, where he played in 56 matches over two years before concluding his career with Finnish club IF Kraft.

Tóth played for the Hungarian national team 56 times, including the 1978 World Cup in Argentina and the 1982 World Cup in Spain. He scored his only national-team goal in the latter tournament, in the 10-1 victory against El Salvador.
