Hungary gain creditable goalless draw in Montenegro

Both sides cancelled each other out in a competitive yet attritional ninety minutes in which any efforts on goal came mainly from long distance.

In front of a sizeable Hungary support in Montenegro's capital city, Marco Rossi's team enjoyed 60% of possession but were mainly restricted to long-range efforts on goal by a stoic and well-organised home defence.

There was an early scare when Ádám Nagy's attempt at a clearing header cannoned off his own crossbar and away but Hungary were soon on the attack at the right end of the pitch. Attila Szalai was unlucky to see his 14-metre glancing header from Callum Styles' cross fly wide of the far-right post and Roland Sallai saw a 25-metre drive sail just a metre or two over the crossbar, but that was as good as it got for Hungary in the first half, who were relieved to see Steven Jovetic's fierce effort flash wide from outside the penalty area and for Dénes Dibusz's finger-tip save to defy Savicevic from distance.

The second half proved just as tight as the first had been, captain Szoboszlai with the best moment for Hungary but his shot from just outside the left edge of the Montenegro penalty area was safely gathered at head height by host goalkeeper Mijatovic. This goalless draw keeps Hungary joint second in Euro 24 qualifying group G on four points, level with Montenegro and two points behind leaders Serbia. Rossi's charges next face Lithuania in their third European qualifier of the current campaign on Tuesday evening in the Puskás Aréna in Budapest.
