Hungary Men now just one point away from Euro 2024
Second-half goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Barnabás hauled Hungary back from two goals down away against Lithuania to rescue a 2-2 draw on Tuesday, a result which means Marco Rossi's team now need only one point from their remaining two fixtures in order to qualify Euro 2024 in Germany next summer.
Rossi opted to make only one change to the lineup which sensationally defeated Serbia last Saturday, Dániel Gazdag coming in for Callum Styles in central midfield. That meant Attila Fiola, Ádám Lang and Attila Szalai made up the three-man defensive line in front of goalkeeper Dénes Dibusz with a four-man midfield of Milos Kerkez, Ádám Nagy, Gazdag and Loic Nego sat behind a front three of Roland Sallai and captain Dominik Szoboszlai either side of lone central striker Barnabás Varga.
They made life very difficult for themselves though, conceding firstly through Fodor Cernych's low shot into the bottom-right corner of the net from just outside the Hungary penalty area in the 20th minute, then again when Pijus Sirvys headed in Gvidas Gineitis' right-wing corner from close range nine minutes before half time. Lithuania goalkeeper Emilijus Zubas somehow denied Kerkez from a matter of metres soon after as Hungary sought a way back into the game, but the visitors had to wait until the 67th minute to halve the deficit, captain Szoboszlai crashing a penalty high into the goal after Zubas had brought down Sallai.
Hungary were very much in the ascendancy now and an equaliser wasn't far away, Szoboszlai swinging in a right-wing corner which Varga superbly planted in the far-left side of the Lithuania goal to level the scores. Try as they might, neither side could find a winning goal, meaning Hungary must wait to secure their place at next year's European Championship.
They lead the group with 14 points with Serbia one point behind and with two teams qualifying for the finals tournament from each qualifying group, that means the Montenegro in third are the only team who can prevent Hungary booking their place. Montenegro have eight points with two games to go, one of which is against Hungary, so if Rossi's charges avoid defeat in that game or their other fixture away in Bulgaria next month, they will be present at their third consecutive contintental finals.
