Hungary men's squad gathers ahead of Bulgaria match
Hungary Men are now preparing in earnest for their hotly-anticipated away match against Bulgaria on Thursday with just a point needed for automatic qualification to Euro 2024 in Germany next summer. Marco Rossi's charges, who round off their campaign at home against Montenegro three days later on Sunday, were all present in Telki on Monday afternoon and all but two participated in the first training session of the week at MLSZ's national training centre.
The two players not yet in top physical condition are Roland Sallai and Péter Gulácsi, both of whom are recovering from injury and require further medical treatment. Everyone else took part in the afternoon training session, one half of the squad performing regeneration execises while the other half were coachedon the centre pitch by national-team head coach Rossi.
Before the training session, Dénes Dibusz and Ádám Nagy were present in the team's press event, both stating that they were aware of uncertainty as to whether the match would go ahead due to appeals regarding the closed-door status of the fixture, but that they like to achieve Euro qualification on the pitch.
"Of course, we've read the news about the match in Bulgaria, but we're preparing to play the match on Thursday, and we also want that to happen, because we want to sesure our Euro 2024 participation on the pitch," Dibusz commented. "The Bulgaria team must be taken seriously, as their game plan may have changed since the appointment of their new national team coach, so we're trying to prepare for all eventualities", the goalkeeper concluded.
Meanwhile, Ádám Nagy revealed that it still feels strange to him that he holds the record for the most international appearances in the current squad, because it reminds him that the time of every footballer is finite and that he's moving closer and closer to the end of his career. He added that he's been confined to the substitutes' bench at his club Pisa and that this isn't a sustainable situation in the long term, so he would like to improve matters as soon as possible in order that in the event of qualification, he would arrive at next year's European Championship in good shape. As for Hungary's next match, Nagy was clear that against Bulgaria, the team can't go into the match with the same attitude as they did in the most one against Lithuania.
"We made a mistake against Lithuania in that we thought we'd done the difficult part after defeating Serbia. We have to avoid this slightly careless mentality against Bulgarians and instead go out on to the pitch with our normal attitude. In our previous matches, the whole team has put their heart and soul on the pitch and we'll need to do this again in the last two matches", the 75-times capped international midfielder concluded.
