Hungary Women suffer last-minute loss to Ukraine

Our women's national team suffered added-time heartbreak on Friday as visitors Ukraine snatched a last-minute winner in the two teams' FIFA World Cup qualifier in Balmazújváros on Friday.

Hungary had already lost to Denmark and Sweden and drawn with Croatia in the current qualifying campaign ahead of this year-ending clash at home to their neighbours who had only played one qualifier thus far, a draw away in Croatia.

For the hosts, three players returned to the starting lineup after injury, Zsanett Jakabfi, Bernadett Zágor and Zsanett Kaján. The guests started in the ascendancy though and were camped in Hungary's half for the first quarter of an hour. They created two or three good chances which they couldn't convert, Hungary thereafter becoming a little more settled and creating one or two openings of their own.

Home-team goalkeeper Réka Szőcs kept the scores level with a fine save in the 35th minute but Hungary were dealt one blow when Henrietta Csiszár suffered a knee injury and had to be replaced by Zsófia Rácz just before the break.

The second half turned out to be a much more even affair; although Ukraine still dominated possession, there were no clear chances to report on either side, Hungary repeatedly reaching the final third but failing to open the scoring. It seemed as if neither team would be celebrating a victory but Ukraine somehow snatched victory in added time when a left-wing cross was diverted into the bottom-right corner of the net by Apanachenko.

Hungary Women's Head Coach Edina Markó: "In the first half, the Ukrainians were better but we sorted ourselves out at the break and did a lot in order to try to score a goal. The girls gave everything for the win and worked fantastically well all week but this is football; Ukraine took all three points with a 94th-minute winner. We need to continue working, analyse where we went wrong and correct the errors by the next match".
