Kazincbarcika promoted to top tier for first time ever
Kolorcity Kazincbarcika, a rural club from the very north-east of Hungary, have secured promotion to the OTP Bank Liga for the first time ever after a thrilling final match day saw them hold off former Budapest giants Vasas to finish in the second promotion spot behind Merkantil Liga champions Kisvárda.
It had been a tight and intense promotion race all season, but with Kisvárda already confirmed as champions, the last round of fixtures was all about whether unfancied Kazincbarcika could seal a fairytale promotion for the first time in their history away at the league's firest-placed team or would former European Cup semi-finalists Vasas pip them with a home victory against another legendary Hungarian club, Budapest Honvéd.
In the end, the pre-match situation remained unchanged as both promotion rivals played out draws, Kazincbarcika 1-1 with Kisvárda and Vasas 2-2 with Honvéd, meaning Gábor Erős's team maintained their one-point advantage over Vasas - 53 to 52 - and secured their passage to the OTP Liga in the 2025/26 season. Vasas, meanwhile, will hope that experienced head coach Attila Pintér will be able to inspire the team to a more successful promotion push next time. At the other end of the table, Gyírmót and Tatabánya have been relegated to the third tier.
