Marco Rossi: There's only one way out of this dip in form
Hungary's head coach has admitted there will be changes to his starting eleven against Bosnia on Tuesday (20:45 CET, Puskás Aréna), but that primarily, changes will come in the understanding of how to adapt the team's tactical play.
Following Saturday's defeat in Germany, Hungary Men's national squad returned to Telki early on Sunday afternoon to continue preparations for Tuesday's home match against Bosnia & Hercegovina. Those who played in Düsseldorf spent the day regenerating, while the rest of the squad participated in a full training session under Rossi's guidance.
One change in personnel has occurred, Antal Yaakobishvili leaving the camp to join up with the Under-21 national squad ahead of their European Championship qualifier against Spain in Kecskemét. This was before Monday's training session for Rossi's squad at Telki, in which there was full participation from the whole squad, and ahead of that Rossi and his team's captain Dominik Szoboszlai attended the pre-match press conference.
"There's only one way to get out of this dip in form and that's to win tomorrow evening," Rossi told the journalists in front of him. "The defeat by Germany is burnt into our memories and the 5-0 will cast a shadow over all our successes to date. We got ourselves out of a similar situation in 2021 after losing 4-0 to England after the Euro and I hope we'll emerge from this one too. Our faces are dtill burning from the slap in Germany, but we've got to move on from this before the match against Bosnia. There will be changes for the game on Tuesday, but we'll mainly work on adapting our tactical principles. Our tactic against Germany was to prepare for modern football which is partly attackjng and partly a high press too. In terms of communication, there was a little misunderstanding, for which I accept responsibility, because it was also in the match plan that for the first 15 minutes we wouldn't let Germany develop their attacks. What happened next can be attributed to the problem in communicating. I take the responsibility, but the players also need to accept their part in it. The Bosnia-Hercegovina national team is a physically strong team full of spirited, determined players who display a high level of technical and tactical quality. We respect the Bosnia team, but even though we know a very difficult match awaits us, our clear aim is to win the three points".
Dominik Szoboszlai added that the players had held a meeting between themselves to try to identify the reasons for the heavy defeat to Germany and that naturally they'd discussed their conclusions with the head coach. The team captain emphasised that the players want to show a clear and obvious reaction to Saturday's defeat, something for which they'll very much need the crowd's support:
"After the Germany defeat, the coach and separately the players too held meetings to discuss what needs changing and how we can return to being our old selves. This year, we raised the bar for ourselves with our 14-match unbeaten run and perhaps now the expectation became one where we should gain points against the very best of our rivals too. We need to be more realistic about our strength, because it shouldn't be expected for this team to match such a strong Germany side in a competitive match away from home."
"Our tactics changed too, but this wasn't the reason for the heavy defeat, but rather the lack of ambition from us which had characterised us in recent times. On Tuesday, we want to give a clear response to the Germany defeat. We've been in a hole before and then the trust between the players and coach never wavered either. We can only emerge from this if we stick together. We'll learn from Saturday's loss, but now we're just concerned with the future. At these times, all support is needed, so we need as many supporters as possible in the Puskás Aréna, because they are an incredibly big help to the team."
