Martin Ádám: We're keeping our heads up and working hard
The day after the European Championship opening fixture against Switzerland was spent regenerating and, for Martin Ádám, answering journalists' questions at Hungary's daily press event.
The Hungarian national team flew back to their headquarters in Weiler after Saturday's match against Switzerland in Cologne, and by Sunday, the focus was already on Wednesday's match against Germany. The team analysed the mistakes together on Sunday morning before those who played in most of Saturday's game engaged in regeneration exercises and the squad members who little or no football joined head coach Marco Rossi for a standard training session. As for the injured players, Loic Nego has already practised with a ball on his own, while Callum Styles can only train without a ball for the time being.
At the press event in the early afternoon, journalists posed questions to striker Martin Ádám who came on as a substitute against Switzerland:
"Of course, we were sad about the losing start, but since then, we've discussed our experiences of the match among ourselves, we know what the mistakes were and what we can't afford to do in the next match," said the striker who plays his club football in South Korea.
"We're disappointed, mainly because of the first half, but the second half already looked better, so this should be considered as a basis for our next matches."
Hungary haven't lost any of their previous three matches against Germany, with two wins and a draw, but everyone is aware that they'll be playing the tournament hosts in Stuttgart on Wednesday.
"We have to be more compact in the match against Germany and all parts of the team need to work together better," Ádám admitted. "Our most difficult group match is coming, but as a team, fighting for each other, we can compete with the hosts. The national team has already shown back in 2021 that it can compete with Germany at a European Championship, then a year later we managed to beat them twice in the Nations League, so we have reason to be positive ahead of the match. Despite the defeat against Switzerland, our heads are still up and we're continuing to work hard, doing everything we can to be able to improve against the Germans.
The defence will be key in Wednesday's match and we can't expect to have the majority of the ball, so we'll have to defend a lot in our half and in our penalty area, so we'll aim to carry out three or four counterattacks and hopefully we can score a goal from them."
In response to a journalist's question, Ádám revealed he's very grateful to Marco Rossi for constantly counting on him, and that it's a great experience for him to be able to participate in the European Championship.
"I'm enjoying every minute of the European Championship, I'm trying to show my thanks to the national team coach for trusting me. Whatever role I get at the European Championship, I want to perform in such a way that I can be proud of myself and my family. The atmosphere of the European Championship can't be compared to any of my previous experiences, and I admit I was a little nervous before our opening match," explained the 29-year-old striker.
