Men's Under 19s put six past Bosnia
Hungary's Under-19 men's national team defeated their Bosnian counterparts, a side also preparing for the UEFA's U19 Euro elite round, 6-2 in Szeged, thanks to doubles from Zalán Vancsa and Zalán Kerezsi, and further strikes from Zalán Gera and Ákos Debreceni.
In the autumn, the U19 national team led by Krisztián Tímár finished top of their mini-tournament group on home soil and is now therefore preparing for the elite round to be held at the end of March, where qualification for the UEFA Under-19 European Championship will be at stake.
As the first stage of preparation for this, Hungary's squad took on Bosnia at the St Gellert Forum in Szeged. This time, foreign-based players weren't available (nor were several key players from the domestic league either), so some new players were given the opportunity to prove themselves. The team's fearless attacking play evident in its autumn matches was again a feature of their performance, with a high press and quick transitions on show throughout.
Hungary took the lead in the 13th minute, the Bosnian defence unable to clear a left corner, and debutant Vancsa placing the ball into the net from six metres. Our second goal was also scored by a Zalán, this time Zalán Gera of Ferencváros (2-1), but Bosnia soon pulled a goal back. That was a moment of fleeting hope for the visitors though and in the last quarter of the half the hosts established a clear advantage, Vancsa dispatching Mátyás Kovács' pass into the goal the 38th minute (3-1) and a third Zalán - Kerezsi - appearing on the scoresheet when pass to the wing pulled the Bosnia defence out of position and allowed him to slip through on goal.
Hungary continued to dominate after the break, first Ákos Debreceni nodding the ball into the net after a left-wing corner before Kerezsi earned and converted a penalty to make it 6-1. Bosnia scored their second goal from a free kick, but they couldn't reduce the deficit any further, the hosts deservedly posting a comprehensive victory.
"I am glad that several players have shown that we can count on those who've had fewer opportunities to prove themselves so far. There is a lot of competition to get into this squad in several positions, something which gives the players a noticeable extra motivation, and the whole team can benefit from this. The six goals scored speak for themselves, and even then we missed several other chances, so this (our attacking play) should be a serious weapon against our elite-round rivals", head coach Krisztián Tímár said after the match.
