NL: Hungary start with defeat in Düsseldorf

Marco Rossi's team was still very much in the game early in the second half away against Germany, but the concession of four goals in 25 minutes turned this experience into a disappointing defeat for Hungary in their opening League A fixture of the UEFA Nations League.

Hungary head coach Marco Rossi opted for a familiar formation and lineup, goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi lining up behind a back three of Márton Dárdai, Willi Orbán and Botond Balogh and a midfield four of Milos Kerkez, Ádám Nagy, András Schäfer and Loic Nego supporting an attacking trio of Roland Sallai, Barnabás Varga and captain Dominik Szoboszlai.

Rossi's charges were on the front foot from the off and had a penalty shout turned down in just the fifth minute when Gross was deemed not to have fouled Varga in the home team's penalty area. The first 20 minutes were an even affair, Germany clearly a little perturbed by Hungary's diligent pressing but also adept at quickly countering and retaining possession. It was from a slick moment of team play that the hosts took a 27th-minute lead, Wirtz, Raum and Musiala combining sweetly with quick, left-footed passes for Niclas Fülkrug to apply a finishing touch just four metres from an empty net.

Five minutes later, Kai Havertz was inches away from doubling Germany's advantage, but his six-metre header from Pascal Gross's cross bounced down from the crossbar and away from goal. Hungary were certainly under pressure but we're still carving out chances, headers from Nego and Orbán signalling their intent without unduly challenging Ter Stegen in the home goal.

Nego made way for Bendegúz Bolla at half-time as Rossi hoped to add fresh impetus into his team and the visitors twice nearly had their reward early in the second period, Bolla denied only by a tremendous last-ditch tackle from Andrich five metres from goal and Varga's header from Szoboszlai's corner being headed away from under his own crossbar by Havertz.

Hungary would rue those moments not going their way when Musiala doubled his team's lead on 58 minutes, outsprinting Ádám Nagy for the ball and tricking his way past Bolla before dispatching the ball low past Gulácsi and inside the near right post.

Two-nil soon became three-nil and effectively game over when Florian Wirtz tucked the ball inside the right post low from 14 metres in the 66th minute before Havertz struck the bar four minutes later. Germany substitute Aleksandar Pavlovic made it four in the 74th minute and Orbán's foul on Havertz six minutes later gave the Arsenal forward the chance to wrap up victory from the penalty spot in front of a capacity crowd of 49, 235. One bright spot for Hungary was the late introduction of young debutant Tamás Nikitscher in place of Ádám Nagy, the latter having drawn level with Ferenc Puskás by winning his 85th international cap.

In the group's other opening fixture, the Netherlands defeated Bosnia-Hercegovina, Hungary's next opponents on Tuesday evening in the Puskás Aréna, 5-2 in Eindhoven.
