OTP Bank Liga: Debrecen shock leaders Fradi

One goal up at half-time, league leaders Ferencváros fell to a spectacular injury-time strike by OTP Liga debutant Dániel Zsóri. MOL Vidi made the most of their rivals’ slip-up as they won their first match of the spring, while elsewhere, Újpest won on the road at Puskás Akadémia, Diósgyőr came from behind to defeat Honvéd and Haladás continue to suffer.

The biggest crowd of the day was at the Nagyerdei Stadion in Debrecen for the early-afternoon match against league leaders Ferencváros. Fradi dictated play throughout the first half but had little to show for their efforts until they took the lead somewhat fortuitously after 30 minutes, Lasha Dvali redirecting a Gergő Lovrencsics effort goalward. Debrecen came more into the game after the break, and duly equalised with seven minutes left from a Dániel Tőzsér penalty following a foul by Dénes Dibusz in the box. Worse was to come for Fradi in the 93rd minute, 18-year-old substitute Dániel Zsóri scoring the winner with a spectacular overhead scissor-kick from just inside the box, a mere 12 minutes into his NBI debut.

Reigning champions MOL Vidi had seen their title challenge falter in the past two weeks, home defeats against Puskás Akadémia and Diósgyőr seeing them fall nine points behind their Budapest rivals, but they signalled their intent with two early goals away to MTK courtesy of strikes from Anel Hadžić and Marko Šćepović. A third from Ianique Stopira nine minutes before the break all but settled matters and although Sándor Torghelle got one back for MTK just after the hour, Vidi ran out comfortable 3-1 winners and now trail Fradi by six points.

Debrecen’s win sees them move up to third, three points behind Vidi, whilst Újpest move up to fourth and only a point behind the Hajdú County team, thanks to a 1-0 win away to Puskás Akadémia with an own-goal from Szilárd Bokros proving decisive. Honvéd slip to fifth after losing on the road at Diósgyőr, a result which sees the Miskolc side move out of the relegation placings. Honvéd had been ahead courtesy of a Danilo strike, but second-half goals from ex-Honvéd players Richárd Vernes and Dániel Prosser gave the home side the three points. Kisvárda slipped to eleventh place following their 0-0 draw at home to mid-table Paks, whilst bottom-placed Haladás – despite taking the lead through Ferencváros loanee Rui Pedro – fell 2-1 at home to Mezőkövesd, Serbian striker Stefan Dražić quickly scoring twice as the Vas County side fall fourteen points from safety with only twelve matches remaining.
