OTP Bank Liga: Leaders Videoton held by Balmazújváros

League leaders Videoton were held to a 1-1 draw against bottom-of-the-table Balmazújváros in the 12th round of the OTP Bank Liga. Ferencváros remain two points behind them in second place after drawing at Puskás Akadémia, champions Honvéd get back to winning ways, and Diósgyőr trounce Vasas.

Balmaz Kamilla Gyógyfürdő 1-1 Videoton (1-1)
Goalscorers: BAL: Andrić (43’); VID: Šćepović (11’)

As expected, Videoton had the bulk of possession, and took an early lead when Marko Šćepović headed home an Ezequiel Henty cross from the left, for his fifth goal of the season so far. It was Balmazújváros who created the better chances in the first half though, and the home side deservedly equalised a couple of minutes before the break, Nemanja Andrić firing home from 15 yards past Ádám Kovácsik.

Andrić spurned a great opportunity to give Balmazújváros the lead early in the second half, firing over with the goal at his mercy. Videoton held the ascendency for the bulk of the remainder of the game, but were unable to create any further clear-cut chances, the game finishing 1-1 as it had done when the teams met in the opening round.

Újpest 0-0 Paks

Újpest were held to a scoreless draw by Paks, with neither side able to make inroads on their opponents’ goal during a first half short on goalmouth action. The home side were the more active after the break, substitute Donát Zsótér at the centre of things. Paks goalkeeper István Verpecz was called into action on a number of occasions as the match wore on, but the visitors came closest to breaking the deadlock when following a free-kick in injury time they twice hit the woodwork in quick succession.

Mezőkövesd Zsóry 0-2 Debreceni VSC (0-1)
Goalscorers: Mengolo (28’), Bódi (84’)

Debrecen moved to within four points of league leaders Videoton courtesy of a goal in each half away to Mezőkövesd. The visitors started strongly, Aleksandar Jovanović nearly catching out Tomas Tujvel from distance, and Bence Sós also testing him early on. The opening goal came in the 28th minute, just when Mezőkövesd appeared to be growing into the game, for Cameroonian forward Justin Mengolo who scoring from an acute angle after being set-up by Kevin Varga.

The hosts continued to dictate play in the second half, missing a number of opportunities to draw level before Ádám Bódi secured the points for András Herczeg’s team with six minutes left to play after Dániel Tőzsér had set János Ferenczi free on the left.

Diósgyőri VTK 5–0 Vasas (1–0)
Goalscorers: Villar (15’), Ugrai (48’, 58’), Vela (71’), Ioannidis (77’)

Diósgyőr shrugged of their poor recent form with an impressive 5-0 victory over Vasas at the Nagyerdei Stadion in Debrecen. 1-0 ahead at the break courtesy of a José Antonio Villar strike from distance after quarter of an hour, Diósgyőr took firm control of the match just after the break thanks to two fine goals from newly capped Hungary international striker Roland Ugrai.

The first, after 48 minutes, saw him cut inside from the left before sending a curling shot into the far corner from the edge of the box, the second – ten minutes later – was almost a carbon-copy, another Diósgyőr counter-attack finding him free on the left-wing, albeit this time his finish being from inside the area. Diego Vela added a fourth in the 71st minute, cutting inside from the right before picking his spot, and Nikolaos Ioannidis completed the scoring six minutes later as the Vasas defence backed off.

Szombathelyi Swietelsky-Haladás 1-2 Budapest Honvéd (0-1)
Goalscorers: HAL: Kiss T. (57.); HON: Eppel (45’ pen, 83’)

Champions Honvéd got back to winning ways after picking up only two points out of the last fifteen, a victory which sees them remain in fourth place, six points off the top. Hungary striker Márton Eppel gave the visitors the lead on the stroke of half-time, scoring with a penalty after Dániel Gazdag had been felled by Szilárd Devecseri. Haladás levelled the scores with a fine strike by Tamás Kiss in the 57th minute, but Eppel had other ideas, firing home from 14 yards with only seven minutes left to play.

Puskás Akadémia 1-1 Ferencvárosi TC (0-1)
Goalscorers: Knežević (84’ pen); FER: Paintsil (39’)
Ferencváros missed out on the chance to draw level at the top of the table with Videoton after a late, disputed penalty from Josip Knežević secured hosts Puskás Akadémia a share of the points. Josiph Paintsil had given Thomas Doll’s side a 38th minute lead, shooting fiercely home after being set-up by Gergő Lovrencsics. The Budapest side continued to look the stronger in the second half but failed to add to their lead. Puskás Akadémia made them pay for their profligacy in front of goal in the 83rd minute, Liridon Latifi going to ground under the attentions of Kenneth Otigba, and Josip Knežević scoring the resultant penalty for a share of the points as he recorded his seventh of the campaign.
