OTP Bank Liga: Top five all win while late goal sinks MTK
League leaders Ferencváros beat Haladás 2-0 at the Groupama Aréna, whilst there were 1-0 victories for Vidi, Újpest and Debrecen. Honvéd scored three without reply against Paks, whilst Puskás Akadémia were the only club in the bottom six to record a victory.
Ferencváros held the upper hand early on against Haladás but were lucky to avoid falling a goal behind in the 25th minute when slack defensive play allowed Funsho Bamgboye in on goal, the Nigerian being forced wide and his shot blocked. The home side were awarded a penalty two minutes later, Fernando Gorriarán being adjudged to have been fouled in the box, but with Gábor Király saving Roland Varga’s effort the game was goalless at the break. The deadlock was eventually broken in the 70th minute, Gergő Lovrencsics striking powerfully from distance and a deflection taking it past Király, who received a double yellow card for protesting. The three points were secured eight minutes later, Dávid Sigér volleying home, although Fradi also had Dénes Dibusz to thank for keeping their lead intact late on.
Vidi started strongly at home to Mezőkövesd, missing a great opportunity to take the lead in the 6th minute. Ákos Elek came close with an overhead effort in the 34th, and two minutes later the Székesfehérvár side got the goal their play deserved, Márkó Futács stabbing home from six yards after being set-up by Georgi Milanov. Futács could well have doubled his side’s lead just after the hour-mark, his shot shaving the bar after he’d been played in by István Kovács. Vidi’s 1-0 victory means that they remain eight points behind leaders Ferencváros with eight rounds still to play.
Debrecen remain third, ahead of Újpest on games won, following a close-fought 1-0 victory over Diósgyőr in the Eastern Derby, Márk Szécsi scoring the only goal of the game from close-range in the 18th minute after his side had weathered an early Diósgyőr storm. A solitary goal also sufficed for Újpest against Kisvárda, their goal coming via a Lacina Traoré penalty midway through the first half. Honvéd remain a point behind Debrecen and Újpest, Filip Holender scoring twice in the first half against Paks to join Davide Lanzafame of Ferencváros at the top of the scoring charts with twelve goals. David N’Gog added a third for Honvéd after the break to set up a comfortable 3-0 victory for Attila Supka’s side.
MTK, under new head coach Tamás Lucsánszky for the first time, fell to a 3-2 defeat away to Puskás Akadémia. The hosts the lead in the 3rd minute, József Varga stabbing home after defensive disarray in the MTK box. Ukrainian defender Yevhen Selin equalised for MTK in the 28th with a firm header from an István Bognár corner on the left. Josip Knežević squandered a gilt-edged opportunity in the 34th, losing his footing with the goal at his mercy, and MTK were ahead a minute later, Sándor Torghelle scoring with a header after Bognár’s cross had broken off Lajos Hegedüs. Puskás levelled three minutes after the break, Zsolt Nagy bundling the ball over the line from Bence Sós’ corner. The winner came in injury time, Benedik Mioč’s shot hitting the post and substitute Nándor Tamás burying the rebound. The victory means that Puskás Akadémia are now five points clear of second-bottom Kisvárda, whilst MTK are one point further ahead.
