OTP Bank Liga: Vidi and Fradi increase gap at the top
Two late goals from Roland Juhász and Ezekiel Henty gave league-leaders Videoton a 2-0 victory over Puskás Akadémia, Dániel Böde gave Ferencváros the points against Újpest, as third-placed Debrecen are held at home by Haladás.
Ferencváros 1–0 Újpest (0–0)
Goalscorer: Böde (82’)
Ferencváros won the derby against Újpest at the Groupama Aréna courtesy of a late strike from Dániel Böde. Újpest were the more active in a first-half in which neither goalkeeper was unduly tested. Josiph Painstil came closest to scoring with a curling effort just off target in the 37th minute, but the game remained goalless at half-time.
Fernando Gorriarán forced Filip Pajović into a fine save with a blistering long-range effort in the 65th minute, whilst Windecker headed wide for the visitors in the 73rd, as it became more likely that a single goal would decide matters. A Paintsil shot hit the crossbar in the 76th, but the goal eventually came when, six minutes later, Dániel Böde rose to head home a Gergő Lovrencsics cross from seven yards out. The result sees Ferencváros remain tight on the coat-tails of Videoton, whilst moving four points clear of third-placed Debrecen.
Videoton 2–0 Puskás Akadémia (0–0)
Goalscorers: Juhász (88’), Henty (90+1’)
League leaders Videoton scored two late goals to see of a resilient Puskás Akadémia at the Hidegkuti Stadion in Budapest. First, Roland Juhász broke the deadlock with a header from a Danko Lazović corner with just two minutes remaining, and then Ezekiel Henty rifled home from 15 yards after being set up by Asmir Suljić a few seconds into injury time.
Following a first-half short on goalmouth action, Videoton had dictated play in the second half but without causing Lajos Hegedüs any great trouble. The two late goals see Marko Nikolić’s side remain two points clear of nearest rivals Ferencváros.
Paks 1–1 Mezőkövesd (1–1)
Goalscorers: PAK: Á. Simon (17’); MEZ: Koszta (29’)
Paks took a 17th minute lead through Ádám Simon with a text-book header as he rose, unmarked to meet a Lajos Bertus corner. The goal appeared to spark Mezőkövesd into life, and they got an equaliser within the half-hour mark, former Honvéd man Márk Koszta, firing home first time from 15 yards after being picked out by Frano Mlinar. The visitors continued to look the more dangerous as the half wore on, albeit Dávid Kulcsár came closest to the net goal when he hit the woodwork.
Both teams put the onus of defence in the second half, neither creating any clear-cut goalscoring opportunities until both sides hit the woodwork in the closing minutes. The draw sees Paks fall to 7th in the table, whilst Mezőkövesd are now bottom on goal-difference courtesy of Balmazújváros’ win away to Vasas.
Debrecen 1–1 Haladás (0–1)
Goalscorers: DEB: Tabaković (68’); HAL: T. Kiss (3’)
Third-placed Debrecen lost ground on the top-two as they were held to a 1-1 draw at the Nagyerdei Stadion by Haladás. The visitors raced into a 3rd minute lead as 16 year-old Tamás Kiss rifled into the corner from outside the box, and Zoltán Medgyes had Sándor Nagy scrambling across his goal to prevent a second not long after. Ádám Bódi came close for the hosts in the eleventh minute, his free-kick on the left skimming off the crossbar, and Dániel Tőzsér giving Gábor Király work to do with his set-piece on the quarter-hour mark, but the visitors went in at the break a goal to the good.
The equaliser came in the Haris Tabaković swivelling to hook home from close-range as the Haladás defence were caught out by a quickly-taken free-kick. Kevin Varga twice came close to adding a second goal with around quarter of an hour left to play, having a shot charged down which just went past Király’s right-hand post, and then forcing a the veteran keeper into a fine diving save moments later. Tabaković spurned a great opportunity to secure the three points late on, contriving to hit his shot over the bar with the goal gaping from four yards out, and with no further goals András Herczeg’s side fall six points behind leaders Videoton and trail second-placed Ferencváros by four.
Vasas 1–2 Balmazújváros (0–2)
Goalscorers: VAS: Remili (59’ pen); BAL: Sigér (32’), Arabuli (42’)
Balmazújváros moved off the bottom of the table, if only on goal-difference, thanks to two first-half goals against Vasas at the Szusza Ferenc Stadion. Dávid Sigér grabbed the first just after the half-hour, indecision from Manjrekar James in the box being punished at the second attempt. Three minutes before half-time and they were 2-0 up, Bachana Arabuli the first to react after a speculative Yuriy Habovda effort had taken a double-deflection.
Vasas upped the ante after the break, Bálint Gaál heading into the side-netting from close-range in the 54th minute, and then team captain Mohamed getting them right back in the game five minutes later from the penalty spot after his shot had been handled in the box by Adrián Rus. Balmazújváros held on though, the three points seeing them leapfrog Mezőkövesd on goal-difference, whilst Vasas remain fourth, ahead of Honvéd on number of victories.
Diósgyőr 2–1 Honvéd (1–1)
Goalscorers: DIÓ: Ugrai (20’), Ioannidis (93’ pen); HON: Holender (38’)
The second match of the Debrecen double-header saw temporary tenants Diósgyőr consign reigning champions Honvéd to their fourth defeat of the season. Roland Ugrai gave them the lead after twenty minutes, sweeping the ball home from fifteen yards as they punished the visitors with a quick counter-attack.
Honvéd levelled a few minutes before half-time, Filip Holender scoring with a looping half-volley from twenty yards after the Diósgyőr defence had only half-cleared a Davide Lanzafame free-kick, and when Dávid Gróf saved Ugrai’s 78th minute spot-kick it appeared the match was heading for a draw. Diósgyőr though, were awarded a second penalty in injury time, this time Nikolaos Ioannidis sending Gróf the wrong way from the spot to give Diósgyőr a victory which brings them to within a point of Vasas and Honvéd above them.
