Rossi: Uruguay match can help us prepare for Wales
Hungary men's head coach Marco Rossi talked about the significance of the stadium's opening match and Zsolt Nagy's prospective debut at his pre-match press conference yesterday, while Roland Varga reminisced over his goal which became Hungary's last official one to be scored in the old Puskás Stadium.
"Willi Orban, as we already know, won't be fit to take to the pitch", reaffirmed Rossi. "We're working on our game and I'm totally satisfied with the boys' work. In light of this, I will give Zsolt Nagy some valuable minutes on the pitch tomorrow as he's done well and will be in contention in Wales too. The lad came to my attention last year, his attributes which persuaded me to select him being his speed, strength and bravery in one-on-one challenges. It would have been good if there'd still be more time for him to gain more experience in NB I matches but in this sort of emergency situation, we need to find a player who was as ready as possible. I've needed to analyse our most recent match against Wales in great depth. We need someone on the left side who can constantly compete with Gareth Bale. It is my basic expectation that every one of my players is at least as motivated as I am, or even better, even more so. In the past, I received such an answer to this from Szilveszter Hangya (Videoton's left-back) that I now cannot imagine him being an international while I'm the head coach. However, it is possible that I've misunderstood something so Szilveszter would need to come and find me to clarify the situation".
Hungary's head coach also stated his team is concentrating on this match against Uruguay but that they have a stern test in Cardiff in four days' time:
"Football is a sport in which everyone has the winning tactic in their hands. The coach has to decide before the match (how his team will play). We'll run out onto the pitch in front of 60,000 fans against a team which has world-class players right down to the last substitute. We want to achieve an admirable result which can help in terms of spirit ahead of our next match against Wales, which is clearly a more important game. Those footballers who play must be the same ones as those who will play in the last Euro 2020 qualifier, not ones which would make up a B-team. At the same time, we can tet out certain players on whom we may count in the future too".
For Roland Varga, this will be his 18th national-team match if he is selected to play, those previous 17 matches featuring three goals of his.
"I scored a free-kick (in the national team's last match at the old stadium on the same site), which the goalkeeper failed to stop", Varga recounted. "It would be a fairytale to score this time too but in any case it will be a great experience to play in such a stadium as this".
