Rossi: We must do three things to beat Serbia
Hungary Men's head coach Marco Rossi, currently in quarantine, made his first public statements on Saturday afternoon following his side's victory over Iceland which ensured EURO 2020 qualification.
Rossi began with good news when answering questions from journalists, confirming he was feeling much better than in the past few days, that all his symptoms were gone by the morning, and that it seems he'll be able to recover from the virus quickly.
Rossi also revealed that there'll be quite a few changes in Sunday’s starting lineup to take on Serbia in the Nations League, some out of necessity and some due to some technical considerations.
What we can be certain of is that Péter Gulácsi played the crucial match against Iceland despite a minor injury, and now he has to rest for a few days to recover, so he has left Telki, as has Willi Orbán, who suffered a minor muscle strain in Thursday's European Championship qualifier. As expected, Roland Sallai has had to return to Germany because of German quarantine rules, so he has also left the camp while suspensions for Attila Szalai and Attila Fiola means the team cannot count on them against one of our southern neighbours tonight.
When asked how he would motivate the players now, the captain put it this way: It will be much easier for us having won our European Championship qualifier compared to for Serbia, who arrive in Budapest having lost their qualifying play-off final.
"Our current ranking in our Nations League group is unexpected. We have faced opponents who are ranked much higher than we are, for example, the Serbian squad is full of players with incredible ability, but if we manage to play as a team against them, we can put them in difficulties. There are three conditions for a successful game against Serbia: teamwork, tactical discipline and the ability of the team to persevere even when things become difficult. If these three are met, we may have a chance of success. Even if we don’t win the group, we'll have a better chance of a good group in the qualification phase of the next major tournament if we get good results in the remaining Nations League matches," Rossi explained.
Responding to another journalist’s question, Hungary's head coach added that mentally, the national team has made a lot of progress over the past year. Its squad members are taking on a different attitude and are better able to put pressure on an opponent’s goal against stronger opponents, while our general attacking play has also improved. This also required serious psychological preparation.
Zsolt Kalmár, who also took part in the press conference, assured those listening that motivation will not be a problem in the matches against Serbia or Turkey.
"It won't be difficult to get up for the match against Serbia, because we have serious aims - we may even have a chance to win the group - and we will do everything we can to achieve this. There are two important matches ahead of us and we want to gain six points from them".
