Szélesi takes Men's U21 reins
Former interim Hungary Men's coach Zoltán Szélesi has replaced namesake Zoltán Gera as Hungary Under 21s head coach with immediate effect. The 28-times capped former Hungary defender will lead the squad until at least the end of the current European Championship qualifying campaign.
Szélesi enjoyed an excellent career as a full-back, intitially at club level for Újpest FC and Debreceni VSC, where he won Hungarian league and cup titles with both clubs, before moving abroad to play in France, Germany, Netherlands and Greece and then back to his home country to end his club career with Puskás Akadémia.
The 42 year-old retired to take up an assistant coach's role next to Hungary Men's head coach Bernd Storck before leading the same squad for two matches after Storck's departure while a permanent head coach was confirmed. Since then, Szélesi has been a regular face in the national-team set-up as U17 head coach then assistant to Robert Kilin and Gera at Under-21 level. His role as U18 head coach so far this year will be filled in due course:
"It is with great delight that I accept this role, since working with the most talented youngsters in Hungary is nothing new to me", Szélesi told mlsz.hu. "I know there are two aims, to develop players for the full national team and to achieve results at U21 level. Everyone is motivated by Marco Rossi's team's development and results, and we would like to support and continue this process. Naturally, partnerships with clubs are essential for effective work. I'm sure this age category's most talented players will be ginven more opportunities than ever before at club level and will be able to play as many minutes on the pitch as possible for their clubs".
