Szoboszlai extends Hungary's unbeaten run

In an evenly-matched game with few clear chances, Turkey defender Enes Ünal’s 52nd-minute handball in his own penalty area was spotted by the referee and his decision to award a penalty was backed up by VAR. Szoboszlai fired the ball inside the right post and into the net to score what proved to be the winning goal and goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi helped preserve the slender advantage with an outstanding save from Yildiz after the Turkey forward had found his way past Hungary’s debutant defender Márton Dárdai, the latter on as a substitute.

Turkey pushed hard for an late equaliser but Hungary repelled their every attack and coud even have doubled their advantage in second-half added time, only for András Schäfer to be adjudged offside before converting a rebound from László Kleinheisler’s 16-metre shot which had been beaten out by Turkey goalkeeper Mert Günok.

This latest victory extends Hungary’s unbeaten run to 13 matches, stretching all the way back to a Nation’s League loss at the hands of Italy in September 2022. The chance to make it 14 undefeated comes on Tuesday evening when Marco Rossi’s side host Kosovo, again in the Puskás Aréna.
