Three clubs continue in European competition

There are now three Hungarian clubs flying their country's flag in Europe this season after Videoton were eliminated by Cyprus's Omonia Nicosia at the Conference League's 2nd qualifying round stage. Ferencváros have dropped into the Europa League after defeat to Midjyland in the Champions League while Paks and Puskás Akadémia have tricky ties ahead in the Conference League's final qualifying round.

Ferencváros: A successful start in Champions League qualifying so far this season featured an aggregate victory over The New Saints from Wales, but Denmark's Midtjylland brought that run to a halt with a 3-1 triumph over two legs last week. That means the Green Eagles drop into the Europa League play-off round where they'll face Borac of Bosnia for the right to play in the group stage which starts next month.

Paks: it was an ignominious start to the European campaign for Hungary's cup winners, a 4-0 home defeat to Romanian second-tier club Corvinul Hunedoara effectively ending their participation in the UEFA Europa League. A consolation 2-0 away victory in the second leg restored some confidence though and a 5-0 aggregate success against AEK Larnaca in the Conference League was the perfect preparation for a 3rd-round tie against FK Mornar Bar of Montenegro, which György Bognár's side safely negotiated 5-2 over two legs. They now face Czech side Mlada Boleslav in the Conference League play-offs for a spot in the group stages.

Puskás Akadémia: The club from Felcsút started with two 3-0  Conference League wins against Dnipro before edging past Ararat-Armenia 4-3 thanks to a last-minute equaliser in the home leg from substitute Artem Favorov, this second match finishing 3-3 after a single-goal victory for the Hungarian club in the first leg in Armenia. Zsolt Hornyák's team now face a tough task in attempting to overcome Italian giants Fiorentina in the play-offs for a place in the Conference League group stages.

Fehérvár: One win in four matches perhaps shows why the team formerly known as Videoton hasn't hung around for long in European competition this time. A 2-1 aggregate triumph over Sumqayit FK set up a Conference League 3rd-round tie with Omonia Nicosia, but the Cypriots prevailed 3-0 over two legs to knock Fehérvár out of the competition.
