Újpest' last-gasp equaliser stuns Fradi while Vidi fall at home again

An injury-time goal from Krisztián Simon denied OTP Bank Liga leaders Ferencváros victory at great rivals Újpest, but with Diósgyőr coming from behind to beat MOL Vidi in Székesfehérvár, Serhiy Rebrov’s side increased their lead at the top to nine points. Elsewhere, Honvéd defeated Puskás Akadémia, there were wins for MTK and Kisvárda but Paks and Haladás were forced to settle for a share of the points in their clash.

MOL Vidi were quick off the mark as they sought to make amends for the previous weekend’s shock home reverse at the hands of Puskás Akadémia, Marko Šćepović finding the net in the third minute. Vidi held the upper hand thereafter but were shocked again in the 28th minute when Branko Mihajlovic chested down a cross from Serhiy Shestakov and rifled the all past Ádám Kovácsik. Five minutes later the visitors were ahead, Dejan Karan stabbing home from close-range following a Richárd Vernes free kick. Vidi continued to press in the second half but were unable to find an equaliser, meaning they have lost ground on league leaders Ferencváros for the second week in a row.

Serhiy Rebrov’s side almost increased their lead at the top to 11 points, having held a 1-0 lead at Újpest from the 11th minute onwards, Roland Varga the scorer with his seventh goal of the season. Fradi looked solid at the back and dangerous in their pursuit of a second goal, but Újpest conjured up a late leveller, Krisztián Simon on hand to score with his side’s first shot on target all evening after Gergő Lovrencsics had inadvertently played the ball into his path. The result sees Fradi move nine points clear at the top, whilst Újpest are still in the running for a European place.

Debrecen, sitting in third before play, fell to a 3-0 defeat away to Kisvárda, being overtaken in the process by Honvéd, 2-1 winners at home to Puskás Akadémia thanks to a brace from Hungary international Filip Holender. Honvéd now sit a point ahead of the Hajdú county side and only two points behind reigning champions MOL Vidi. MTK, defeated at home against Paks last week, found more joy on the road at Mezőkövesd, coming from 1-0 and 2-1 behind to win 3-2 thanks to goals from Máté Katona, József Kanta and Patrik Vass. Tamás Feczkó’s side now lie in fifth place, level on points with Újpest and only one behind Debrecen.

Haladás, ten points from safety going into their match away to Paks, would normally have been relatively happy in coming back from 1-0 down at the break to get a share of the points away from home, but with fellow strugglers Kisvárda and Diosgyőr both winning against more fancied opposition, the Szombathely side now find themselves 12 points behind third-bottom Kisvárda, with only 13 matches left to play.
