Varga in good spirits after operation
Hungary's first-choice centre forward underwent an operation on Monday in Stuttgart after breaking his cheekbone on Sunday, and will already be able to leave the hospital on Wednesday.
The joy Hungary felt after the 1-0 defeat of Scotland was naturally tempered by Barnabás Varga's serious injury, the multiple cheekbone fractures incurred when the Ferencváros striker collided with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn midway through the second half. He was immediately taken to hospital and underwent surgery on Monday. The operation went well, according to doctors, and Varga is expected to be able to leave the hospital on Wednesday. The other members of the squad were given a rest day on Monday, with only Kevin Csoboth undertaking some tasks; in addition to a couple of interviews, a press conference was waiting for him to attend in the national team's press centre.
"I watched the goal a thousand times on the bus yesterday; I still get goosebumps when I think about it," admitted the Újpest forward. "I knew we'd have another big chance, but I didn't think that I'd get the last shot. I'm happy that I decided the match, but the most important thing is to win and of course that Barni Varga is fine. The whole team is with him in spirit and I trust we can meet him as soon as possible. The match turned out exactly as we expected and the end was exciting, but the most important thing was the victory. Now we wait, we count - we can't do anything else - then we'll see whether or not the victory was enough. As far as I'm concerned, the goal didn't change anything - no matter how much time I get, I have to put a performance on the table, so that in those minutes I can help the team."
