Vidi keep Champions League hopes alive
Loic Nego's second-half equaliser ensured Hungary's last representatives in Europe this season, MOL Vidi FC, came away from Sweden with a 1-1 draw against 1980 European Cup finalists Malmo in the first leg of their Champions League 3rd qualifying round tie on Tuesday.
Marko Nikolić's were again well-organised in defence - just as they had been away against Ludogorets in the previous round. Malmo's attackers were effectively neutralised and counter-attacks were created on several occasions. The first half was somewhat of a battle with ultimately little goalmouth action.
That all changed in the second period though, the hosts dominating possession more and taking a 62nd-minute lead through Christiansen who received a good pass, tricked his way into half a metre of space and fired the ball into his net.
Vidi responded encouragingly, Lazovic' free-kick thudding against the woodwork in the 65th minute before an equaliser arrived six minutes later, Loic Nego successfully fighting for space between two defenders before smashing a shot in under the crossbar.
There were no more goals in the remaining 19 minutes plus four minutes of added time, the 1-1 draw providing great cheer to Vidi who now enter the second leg at home with an away goal and therefore currently as the team who will progress to the play-off stage if next Tuesday's match at the Pancho Aréna finishes goalless.
