Vidi start Europa Liga group with home defeat to BATE
MOL VIdi were punished for inaccurate finishing in the Groupama Aréna on Thursday evening as they slipped to a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of BATE Borisov in the opening match of the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League group stage.
The damage was done by a goal in each half but Marko NIkolic will rue his side's profiligacy in front of goal having had the bulk of possession against their opponent from Belarus which conceded territory and largely relied on counter-attacks to provide a threat.
Vidi had started in positive fashion and dominated the early possession without managing to create much in the way of clear chances. They were punished for not seizing the initiative when Jasse Tuominen latched on to Evgeni Yablonski's through pass, worked his way past two defenders and slotted the ball through Vidi goalkeeper Tomas Tujvel's legs from a tight angle on the left side of the penalty area.
Vidi didn't let that goal inhibit them and could have equalised several times before half-time, firstly when István Kovács scooped the ball wastefully over the crossbar when moving on to Loic Nego's pass across the edge of the penalty area and then when the Hungarian international playmaker arrowed a low shot towards the bottom right corner of the BATE net from the left channel, only to see away goalkeeper Scherbitski stick out his left hand and palm the ball behind for a corner.
Recent free-transfer signing Milanov from Bulgaria and Marko Scepovic also spurned presentable chances of an equaliser but the signs for Vidi were that they were very much still in with a chance of at least a point, that was until Filipenko was left all alone 12 metres from goal to head in Stasevich's inswinging left-wing free-kick in the 85th minute and seal the first three points in the group. There was still time for Filipovic to earn a red card for committing a second bookable offence.
