Zalaegerszeg back in top-flight as NB II champions with Kaposvár set to join them
Zalaegerszeg secured promotion to next season’s OTP Bank Liga last Wednesday courtesy of a 2-1 win at Cegléd and claimed the title on Sunday with a 4-1 win at home to Budafok. Kaposvár, winners at Balmazújváros and at home to Vác, look set to join them after Vasas’ spring revival came off the rails against Mosonmagyaróvár and Budaörs.
Zalaegerszeg secured promotion to NB I with three matches to spare as they came from behind to win 2-1 away to Cegléd last Wednesday. Goals from Gergely Bobál and Zoran Lesjak gave Barna Dobos’ side the three points, putting them 12 points ahead of third- and fourth-placed Gyirmót and Vasas with only nine points left to play for. The Győr side were held 1-1 by Csákvár whilst the Angyalföld club lost 2-1 away to Mosonmagyaróvár with Viktor Szabó scoring twice – the winner in injury-time – after the division's top scorer Ádám Balajti had equalised for Vasas.
Kaposvár made the most of those two clubs' slip-ups, winning 2-0 away to Balmazújváros with Martin Ádám and Zsolt Patvaros on the score sheet, and the round 36 matches saw the Somogyi County side on the verge of clinching promotion as Martin got the only goal of the game at home to Vác, whilst Gyirmót lost the Győr derby 1-0 away to ETO, and Vasas – despite coming from 3-1 down at the break – were held 3-3 at home by Budaörs.
Zalaegerszeg top the table on 76 points, with Kaposvár second on 68, Vasas third on 62 and Gyirmót fourth on 61. This means that Kaposvár can join Zalaegerszeg in the OTP Bank Liga next season if they get a point from their match in Dorog this coming weekend, or if Vasas slip up at Cegléd and Gyirmót fail to beat Békéscsaba.
